Anyone's Dr. Ever Fully Support Using Diapers

Unmanly huh? A Dr said that knowing it's a disability? Not really much of a Dr is he?

I've found that most doctors believe that men should not wear a diaper unless every other option has failed. I even had one urologist that wearing a diaper is "unmanly". So I've given condom catheters, which is what I've been told is a better solution, on three different occasions. However, I found,the condom catheters caused more skin irritation (and in a particularly sensitive place), were less comfortable to wear, and more prone to catastrophic leaks than a diaper. So I'm a diaper boy.

Have you ever checked out Men's Liberty catheters? As far as a condom catheter they are the best.
Condom catheters come in different sizes and kinds. I would start by getting samples from different Medical places. They would be happy to send you different samples. I used to wear Colorplast Conveen condom catheters. They are made a little bit better than some of them
I know we are all different and have different needs. Have you been checked by a Board Certified Urologist? Have you had a Urodynamics test done? IF you are holding urine it can back up into the kidneys and no diaper will prevent that! I was in diapers, then straight cathing and the drugs. Then to condom catheters. Now a Foley for life!

My Doctor has never even mentioned it, he just refered me to the continence nurse.

I would suggest going to a Urologist and get checked out. That's the problem seeing someone who is not educated in Urology.
Do you live in England? because they have Continence Nurses there!

with the chance of damage from a cath going in and out and the time I had with the spc when I was younger my new family doc tried a few the meds and she told me not to worry about it to just wear the diapers till I get checked out with the spine doc I have to goto

My own personal experience is a RESOUNDING NO to your question about a doctor suggesting or approving the use of diapers. I have seen urologists (all MD's in either private practice or in a hospital practice) from coast-to-coast (literally from Virginia to California and Washington state with Michigan inbetween and Alaska too) and NOT ONE has suggested nor concured with my choice to use absorbent products.

Maybe this i a little off topic, but my GP would be worried if I told him I would try to manage without diapers.
I have tried before, and I am able to concentrate and manage it for maybe a few days. The problem is that I use so much of my capacity, that my mental condition gets much worse.
If diapers is the most functional solution, that should be ok.
After all, the most important thing is to live as normal as possible, regarding function.
Sometimes I think also the doctors have their own fear of diapers, a fear from their own childhood.
Diapers are for many something emotional. Crutches, hearing aids and other equipment is more neutral.
It is a tool for functioning. Thats all.

In the UK things are rather different from the USA. As the health service provides the needful, doctors tend to go more towards the sheaths (external catheters) and bags route which is convenient and has less risks attached in terms of rashes and the like. Only in the case of bowel problems and nappies (diapers) considered as there is no other way to deal with that.

Over the years I have used both and currently use the sheaths and bag at night as the volume I pee is rather large - 2 litres, due to somwhat swollen legs by the end of the day (sitting in wheelchair isn't good for them).

I doubt most of my doctors even know! I don't think my gp and I have ever discussed it. My urologists asked if I wear pads. I obviously said yes but j don't think they are thinking of nappy style ones really. I don't know if that is support. My continence nurse is ok with it although ultimately wants me to not need them. I had Botox last year and it worked but I am worried about a potential side effect I experienced. I don't know if it is related....so I don't know whether to just of down the no surgery and possibly even no meds route next.

Yes my Dr knows & at first really didn't like the idea so much as he was concerned of skin issues. Now nothing is ever mentioned as he see's that by staying sanitary there are no issues. He now says that if it works for me he has no issues with it & it's no longer discussed.
