Thanks everyone for the info on Dreft. I'll let my wife know what I just learned. :D

Pretty much any detergent that doesn't have extra fragrences and dyes in it and will rinse clean will work. There are other out there besides Dreft that will work well and are more resonably priced. When I was wearing cloth (before we moved from a house to an apartment and had to start going to a laundromat to do our laundry) I would use a laundry deterget I got from an Amway rep. (I'm not selling it so don't think I'm trying to sell it. I don't) But it was good and it worked really well. My point being there are other options out there. Look around.

We used to have a regular washer and dryer, top load, but don't remember the brand (maybe Kenmore?). It was not a premium model, and used very hot water. The dryer was hot and didn't take long to dry the diapers. However it wore out the cloth and the plastic pants didn't last long. So when it was reaching end of days we did some research and bought the Miele stacked washer and dryer. We have a small space so it wasn't the huge model, but adequate. Well, I can't say too much good about it. Everything comes out fresh and clean and even the plastic pants last for months and longer - no tears after a year. I don't even use the full cycle, just the short cycle and it's fine. It's HE so doesn't use much water, yet gets everything clean. The dryer takes longer because it's energy efficient and not so hot.

Fred, thank you for your posting. I had not really thought much about the washer actually damaging the cloth diapers and pants.
