I don’t think anything absorbs like cloth. Looking back in older posts, and my own experience suggests that a cloth booster, even thin one, helps spread wetness much better within the diaper than without. In fact, I wonder how a cloth booster inside a store brand diaper would work. That could be a huge cost savings if you don’t mind rinsing out and laundering a booster.

Try adding a cotton pad inside of your nighttime diaper. Maybe try using something like a face cloth or two as a test. The cotton will absorb faster than your diaper or booster and then distribute the wetness to the diaper slowly. I would highly recommend a plastic or PUL pant over everything just in case. In the morning just rinse out the wet face cloths and hang to dry before laundering.
I have been using the face cloth/cloth booster in a disposable trick all weekend and yesterday. Very good results i think. I don't think i even came close to having a leak, which is great. One less thing to worry about. As described the cloth did a good job of evenly distributing everything. The SAP in the disposable then helped keep the cloth from being overly soaked. That seems like a pretty decent system, and I will be adopting this approach to at least my night time routine for now. This would allow me to use a less expensive, (lesser quality) disposable and rely more on the cloth for the leak protection. Not having to worry about my poor wife sleeping too close to me is a great improvement too!
Ellyn: I think you wrote the post a couple years that was your "how-to definitive guide to cloth diapering." Super well written! I read a lot of that chat, trying to learn about this stuff, and got a ton of information. Pretty much went from absolutely no knowledge, to knowing what i would need to order, size, and what should work the best. One of those tips i found particularly helpful was on the Leakmaster pants which you mentioned would fit higher up on the waist. That is a problem area for me at night typically.
So anyway, thanks for the good advice guys. I will have to continue to see how this works for me. I am not opposed to using more cloth while at home. Definitely at night. I imagine I will continue to mix and match and find best practice for me.
