My worst public accident was in 2002. Since then I have been extremely careful to prevent visible leaks. Recently I thought about a challenge that has appeated the last ten years. Cellphone cameras. If they had existed in 2002, I would have been all over facebook etc.. as I was spotted by a group of teenagers. The risk of being filmed and shared is just another thing to be cautious about nowadays. Just another reason to be extremely careful to avoid those wet spots... Anyone else with thoughts about this? |

In another post when someone said it depends on how you approach it. It has become a fact of life when ever out in public, nothing is private anymore. So many camera out there. Either for safety or just recording what is happen. I even have started driving around with a driving camera. embarrassing as it maybe, I would just combat it like others who have been shamed and explain I have a medical issue that this happens sometimes and if I could change it I would. For me I think I would go into details about my stroke I had and one of the outcomes happens to be my bladder will go into uncontrollable spasms due to the stroke. So I have to wear these darn things and sometimes they leak. One instance that happen to me at work, was a younger guy would say to me something about my age and getting my Depends in a bunch. Finally, I called him in my office and I started off with reminding him I had a stroke 10 years ago. Since I didn't really know how to say it I just came out and asked him "Was it that noticeable I am having to wear absorbent material?" I would say he was a little embarrassed, than apologized about making the statements. Followed by he has seen other people younger than me have a stroke and had far worse issue, like complete loss of use of limbs. Plus, being in combat some of his friends have some major medical issues from being injured. Since that day he has never made that comment again. Afterwards, I wasn't the one embarrassed, he was, but we still talk and work together like we ever had the conversation. |

As embarrassing as this is, the excess of cameras in our society may actually speed the demise of the stigma which so threatens us. Cameras will force folks to understand that incontinence is a common problem, one that affects folks of every age and circumstance. |
