what tests should i expect?

Sat Aug 11, 2012 10:02 am

I started out with just bladder incontinence and now it's both I'm really scared about going to the doctor, i know i need to people have told me that it might be reversible but the longer i wait the less likely it will be, but i am getting steadily worse, so maybe if i knew what to expect i might not be as nervous?

I went in to see my urologist due to frequency, night voiding, and what felt like retention. I ended up with a prostate exam that day and urodynamics a week later.

Not fun stuff, but you if you are having issues you need to go.

The only tests I have ever had for the bladder incontinence were a prostrate digital exam ( doctors finger up the anus ) and a scan like they do on pregnant woman. Prostate was fine but the scan revealed my bladder was always half full.
I think because I am in a wheelchair they were only interested in helping me with catheters and pads and any further tests would be a waste of time.

As I am bowel incontinent, I can say that after you finish with the urological tests and begin the testing of the anus, sphincter, rectum, and sigmoid colon you will just be having so much fun you will not be able to stand it!

Seriously, for bowel, physical examination of the rectum, anal endoscopy, anal manometry (balloons inserted up your rectum and inflated to various levels to test sensing and ability to defecate), defecogram (they fill your rectum with barium solution and you defecate while being imaged by x-ray video), digital rectal mapping (gloved finger up your anus and then mapping the nerves of the rectal wall while you respond to determine sensory loss). Possibly a colonoscopy but only if you have not had one recently.

Best wishes,
