I found olive oil helpl heal diaper rashes. I don't know if this works for genuine rashes that require medical treatment, but in general I find that I get rashes between the leg that seem to come particularly in hot weather that can make walking terribly painful. Smearing olive oil on it makes it go away.

Sounds to me like you had chaffing...Chaffing isnt technically considered "diaper rash" because its caused by friction, not ph balance or skin deterioration urine and feces can create. Having said that, i dont know if olive oil would help a true diaper rash or not. What i use is a dab of zinc oxide covered up with gold bond medicated cream and depending where the rash lies, a layer or two of toilet paper or a paper napkin, between it and the diaper.

Vandel,

I would think that olive oil would function very much like Vaseline in that it forms a thin barrier to protect the skin from urine and also reduces friction. Real diaper rash creams form a thicker protective barrier and usually contain an antibacterial agent such as the zinc oxide that Lillidew mentioned.
