Small number of postings

Thu Nov 11, 2004 12:58 pm

A very disappointing thing about this forum is the very small number of posts that it attracts. I suspect that Joe is right that at least part of the problem is the forum's complexity. It's hard to figure out the most appropriate place to put something. Simplification of the kind Joe suggests might encourage more posts.

Another possibility may be the fact that this forum is somewhat hard to find using Google and other search engines. I don't know how to improve the ease with which newcomers can find a web paage. If anyone else knows, I suspect that it would be helpful to pass along that info to the creators of this page.

Im not surprised that we only have a few messages posted so far.
This forum has only been live for a short time and im sure that there are a number of incons that do not like to post on a forum.

As far as this homepage being hard to find in Google, It takes the search engines a while for them to pick up a new homepage and get it in their listings. Hopefully over time they will pick up this homepage and give us a better listing.

We have submitted this homepage to some different search engines and all we can do is wait for them to list it.

If anyone has any ideas on how we can get better listings in the search engines, please let us know.

As schoppy said, it can take some months to be indexed by the search engines. There are a few things that can be done to speed it up a little. The mods may have already done this, but if not it's worth a try.

Go to www.google.com/addurl.html and submit the site to Google. They give no guarantee this will help, but it can help the site be recognized if it hasn't been yet.

There are more suggestions at: www.google.com/webmasters/
If you are having difficulty getting listed in the Google index, you may want to consider submitting your site to Yahoo! or Netscape. You can submit to Yahoo! by visiting http://docs.yahoo.com/info/suggest/ . You can submit your site to Netscape's Open Directory Project (DMOZ) by visiting www.dmoz.org . Once your site is included in either of these directories, Google will often index your site within six to eight weeks.

The key thing is that the site is linked to from similar sites. Do some of the big diaper sites like DiaperPin or BornToLove have "Links" pages? If so the Mods could suggest reciprocal links between this site and theirs.

Having links to diaper manufacturer sites would help as well, even though these sites won't link here. Linking to Depend.com, Poise.com, Attends, Tranquility, etc. can raise the Google pagerank by helping the engine understand where incontinentsupport fits in. The "quality" of the links matters more than "quantity." Linking to everything diaper under the sun could actually lower the pagerank.

Kendal is right. It takes a bit of work to get a site somewhere at the top of a search engine's results. (too much to mention and it would be a bit off-topic)

As for the low number of posts, I don't think it has anything to do with forum complexity (the same style works for a very high number of forums with many thousands of users and posts all over the web).

What I'd "blame":
-The site needs to be easier to find,
-The real forum link is at the bottom of the page, not everybody will bother reading that far on that page. Perhaps the "forum" link in the left menu should take directly to the forum itself,
-And finally (but not least), people don't usually post in forums where there are few posts - it's just a matter of getting the ball rolling.
