Maybe it's just me but I find the Forum complex. I very much favor the Forums where a new post follows the previous with no categorization. And no buried replies. I've posted a few places here, as you know, but if I check in to see what's new, I really have no idea how to see what's new, there's too much progressing from screen to screen.

It may be that this format is all that is available from this Forum provider; in which case I'll have to get used to it.

I do wonder what other's think; I hope I'm not the only one who would much prefer a straight forward, in line posting method.

To find out what messages are new is real easy for members of this forum.
After you sign in, just click on the "View posts since last visit" .
You will find that on the right hand side above the topics.

That will show you all the new messages since your last visit.

I agree with Tom K. I'm new to this forum and find it hard to navigate. My preference would be to see a list of *all* postings in order of posting time when I log on. If the topics and authors are listed, I can scan them for what I want to read.
As an example, see: rec.aviation.soaring.
Dividing the posts by general topics is unnecessary.

I have to completely disagree on this. Every forum I have ever been on the web has different categories like this. It helps keeping things "categorized" and replies in context and logical order. The sites with a "flat" forum have no apparent order of things, and you can't even be sure who replies to what, and the old posts are really buried hundreds of pages deep and in no particular order or anything...

This is the widely adopted "new" format everything is on the web nowadays. Look at all the forum software (vBulleting, IPB, phpBB, ...) and all the sites using it (or 95% if them) and you'll see this is no exception, it's just progress. But I do understand it may take a while to get used to...

I do must disagree. Bulletin boards that offer no categories and simply dump everything in on top of one another are a pain. Once you learn how to use the features of PHP bulletin boards like this one, you'll soon learn that they offer much more flexibility and power to the user than the old style all on one screen days of old.

There are now 6 different styles that registered users can pick from for their personal style that they want to use.

As for complexity... My opinion is that the only reason why some people prefer the older, outdated model is they have been forced to use that on many incon sites, and they have gotten used to that same, inferior model.

There are over 40 thousand sites using phpbb alone (plus many thousands of sites using similar forum software like vBulleting or IPB). It's clearly, by FAR, the most widely used model on the web today. Most people just don't look back. Perhaps the categories in which the forum is divided could be reviewed, but otherwise the concept is great.
