Hi all. this week I have been travelling and used disposable diapers during the night. At home I mix a bit between cloth and disposables, depending upon how I feel and the amount of washing going on at home. As you guess I had a big leak during the night in the hotel. Luckily I always put additional protection underneath the sheets in case of ...
The result was a wet pyjama, wet bed and a broken night. Once I got home I decided to use cloth for the first few nights as my confidence was broken in disposable diapers. We are now a few days down the road and I have 'cooled down'. I start mixing again (don't want to be a daily drain on the washing machine). What I figured out is that cloth gives me more confidence for a good night rest than disposable diapers. Do you share the same feeling?
Cheers, Bob

Interesting that you brought this up right now. At night I normally wear a premium pull-up with a thickly folded cotton pad inside all covered by Gary PUL pants. This way if I wake up having to pee I can just pull everything down, use the toilet, pull everything back into place and get back to sleep. Fortunately having to pee during the night doesn't happen very often. But unfortunately when I do have to go while sleeping I usually don't even wake up and end up having a "peeing dream" thus having a soaked pad/diaper when I wake up. Well last night I must have had a major flood which not only soaked the pad but also a major portion of the pull-up. Some even got out into my PUL Pants but at least nothing leaked out onto the bed sheets. As you mentioned it really shakes your confidence in your protection. I guess I could just start using one of my premium (Better Dry) diapers at night with a pad inside but now I'm worried that that will always be enough. Getting to your point though, I've never used an all-cloth diaper before but I'm starting to think, as you have, that I may need to switch to full cloth diapers at night. Just when you think you've got your protection for your IC figured out it always seems to throw you a curve ball that you weren't expecting.

This whole experience is tough enough without any other wrinkles. Basically after you accept that... "I am in diapers" one needs to be realistic about what has to be done and what best suits or comfort level and best addresses our needs. People avoid cloth diapering for various reasons. ie. They require washing, too bulky, too babyish, etc. etc. etc. I have only worn cloth diapers at night for 15 years now (prostate cancer) and wear cloth diapers in the day as much as possible. I can't remember the last time they did not "work" for me at night. I "over kill" and double up at night for two reasons. One is total peace of mind and comfort and i also wake early and come down to make coffee and read the news and check emails, etc. and prefer not to have to worry about changing till i shower which usually is three hours after i get up. I throw my diapers on the floor of the shower then wash up and at the end wring out the diapers and throw in laundry till i need to do wash. I find no problems with that system. We all have different needs. Find what works best and do not let taboos or anything stop you from using what will give you a good nights sleep and comfort and security. Glitches happen in everything life throws at us adapt and go forward. Papa

Just got back from trip during which I was in disposables the whole time. I must say that it was very comforting to get back into cloth after I got back home.

Disposables have earned a legitimate place in my inventory; however, cloth diapers have always given me the best, most comfortable, most reliable protection.

May I ask what fold you use for your cloth nappies?

I use ACD (adultclothdiapers.com), medium, night weight, birds-eye weave, plus AngelFluff polyurethane or DMP laminate overpants.

Yes, but, how do you fold it?

I use several folding techniques. For overnight or long-term daylight protection, I use two heavy diapers plus a gauze pad. I fold the inner diaper plus the pad so as to accommodate the male anatomy. Basically I fold a reservoir in front that extends between my legs. This may require three diapers when I use ratty older diapers. Daytime protection is usually just a single overnight diaper plus a gauze pad. When I'm having bowel leakage I use the four-pin setup; otherwise I simply use a single pin at each side of my waist.
