JDinVirginia, you bring up a good point, to an extent. Folding your diapers vertically, is a very good idea.
It also has to do though, with how MUCH pee is released at any given time. if you only "leak" or dribble, the mat close to the skin is just fine.
Having room in the back of the diaper for fecal containment, is put there to help prevent a "blow out" and has very little to do with quickly absorbing pee. Unless youre laying on your back, or are a woman standing up, you will soak the front of your diaper first, before it reaches the back.. If ANYONE, male or female, is sitting down when they pee, the pee will never properly absorb below the weight of your butt, so having room between your diaper and you skin is a must, if youre going to flood.
